STORES WE LOVE
After 50 years in retail and the creation of seven different stores during that time period, I think I know a thing or two about what it takes - the commitment, the courage and the creativity combined with just the right amount of “crazy”.
I believe that the success of a store is created not just by the products and the presentation but also by the people and the atmosphere. When the creators have the courage to take a giant leap outside the box, magic happens.
I have been inspired by so many around the world that are no longer open. But, here are some that touch me and I think are well worth visiting. Not all will have furnishings for small spaces but just may have some “magic pieces that will bring joy to your space.
And, if you have visited some that have brought that magic to you, let us know.
Blu Dot
Blu Dot is all about smart, modern design that’s as thoughtful as it is beautiful. Every piece they create is designed with real life in mind - how we live, how we work and how we move through our spaces. Their furniture doesn’t just look good, it serves a purpose, has personality and is built to last.
What really sets Blu Dot apart is their commitment to sustainability. They’re constantly rethinking materials, refining their processes, and holding themselves to high standards, because good design should be good for everyone, including the planet. With a long-term focus and a whole lot of heart, Blu Dot continues to create designs that feel as good as they look

Umbra
We’ve had a longtime love for Umbra - we were actually their very first customer when they launched in 1979! Since then, they’ve grown into a global brand, all while staying true to their Toronto roots and their mission to make modern design accessible to everyone.
Umbra is known for reimagining the everyday, think wastebaskets, kitchen tools, bath accessories and turning them into pieces that are functional, stylish and a joy to use. Their commitment to affordability means you don’t have to spend a fortune to surround yourself with great design. Plus, we especially admire their dedication to supporting young Canadian designers and bringing fresh ideas to life.
West Elm
We’ve always admired West Elm for their ability to combine modern, approachable design with a deep commitment to doing good - for people and the planet. Since launching in Brooklyn in 2002, they’ve become a leader in sustainable and ethical home furnishings, setting the bar for how beautiful design can also be responsible.
West Elm is known for using low-impact materials like FSC-certified wood, organic cotton, and recycled textiles, and for ensuring their pieces are made with care through Fair Trade partnerships around the globe. They were actually the first major home brand to partner with Fair Trade USA -a milestone that’s had real impact on artisan communities and factory workers alike.

CB2
When CB2 opened their very first store in Chicago, we were there - drawn in by their bold design, fresh colour palettes and amazing affordability. We still have a few of those early pieces in our home today, which says a lot about their lasting quality and style.
CB2 has always stood out for its edgy, modern aesthetic, but what we admire most is their commitment to creating a better tomorrow. From using FSC®-certified wood and recycled materials to supporting ethical supply chains and exploring circular design, they’re proving that high style and sustainability can go hand in hand.
With climate goals, empowered teams and a more conscious customer experience, CB2 is rethinking what it means to live and shop well.
Bergo Designs
Bergo Designs isn’t about furniture, it’s about finishing touches with soul. Tucked into Toronto’s Distillery District, this design destination is home to one of the most beautifully curated collections of objects we’ve ever seen. From iconic Scandinavian pieces to playful everyday items, everything at Bergo feels thoughtful, elevated and full of character.
In small-space living, you buy less but you buy better. That’s why we love Bergo. Whether it’s a sculptural clock, a minimalist candleholder or a whimsical kitchen tool, every object has purpose and personality. These are the little details that bring a home to life and make even the most compact space feel curated and complete.

Gus* Modern
Gus* Modern is a true Canadian design success story, and a favourite of ours for good reason. Based in Toronto, Gus* creates modern furniture that’s as functional as it is beautiful. With clean lines, thoughtful proportions and a focus on quality craftsmanship, their pieces are made to elevate the way we live, work and gather.
For small spaces, Gus* is a goldmine. Many of their designs are tailored to urban living, offering smart functionality without sacrificing style. Whether it’s a streamlined sofa, a clever storage solution or a perfectly scaled table, Gus* helps you create a space that works hard and looks amazing.
Original design, Canadian roots and a deep respect for modern living, that’s what makes Gus* so good.
