Dealing with Sentimental Items (Without the Meltdown)

Sentimental things are often the hardest. Here’s how to approach them without getting stuck:
Don’t Start Here
Begin with quick wins - closets, drawers, cabinets. By the time you get to the emotional stuff, you’ll have built your “letting go” muscle.
Hold a Friends & Family Party
Invite your people over and let them take what they love from your stack of giveaways. Give them a deadline - anything not claimed goes to donation the next day.
Decide How Much Space You’re Willing to Give
Maybe it’s one drawer, one shelf or one bin. Stick to it. Don't let “sentimental creep” take over your storage.
Take Photos of What You Let Go
Create a digital album for things you’re parting with. You’ll still have the memory without the clutter.
Digitize the Memories
Photos of people you don’t recognize? Let them go. Kids’ artwork, sports tees, heirloom china - scan or photograph them, then make albums (digital or printed). Some folks even turn T-shirts into quilts (if that’s your vibe).
Expect Some Pushback
Gramma might ask where her cupboard went. Be honest - but be ready but don’t let her find the afghan she crocheted in the dog bed!
Choose Your Support Wisely
Bring in a friend - not a family member. Choose someone decisive, not sentimental and definitely not someone who will take your clutter home to add to theirs!
Remember This
Your memories live in your heart, not in your stuff. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting. It means creating space for the life you’re building now.
